Advisory
Community
The core of any advisory is a sense of community, one in which students can express their identity openly while having the support of both an adult and peers. Through advisory, students learn to forge new friendships, speak authentically while respecting their classmates, and collaborate to make decisions for the group. It is this foundational sense of community that helps students thrive academically and socially, while at the same time building connections to their community and the world at large. A sense of responsibility for the community is a necessary factor that helps drive social change.
ACADEMICS AND SELF ADVOCACY
The transition from elementary to middle school is challenging as students move from a single classroom environment to one in which they are asked to meet the expectations of many different classes and teachers. Organizational challenges often surface as students learn to take responsibility for their learning. As an advisor, I work with students to help them seek out the support that they need as they develop the student skills necessary for success. From periodic check-ins to broader goal setting and measurement, the advisor-advisee relationship is one of trust and support leading to more independent learners.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING
The middle school years often reveal new challenges that manifest in the social sphere. Students begin forming new friendships and alliances while drifting away from older ones. They also begin to enter the world of relationships and often need guidance to help navigate social dynamics. As an advisor, I help students make connections to human behavior. At times, this involves unpacking the student's own emotional response. Alternatively, it can encompass the dynamics of the class of students as a whole. Ultimately, through a supported discursive process with a trusted adult, students can find ways to navigate their middle school years.
