Athens/Sparta Debate: After learning about different Greek city-states, students are asked to debate upon whether Athens or Sparta is a better place to live. Half of the class represents Athens while the other half represents Sparta. Before the assignment, students read and write about the different characteristics of Athens and Sparta so they are prepared for the debate. The content of the debate is broken up into the following categories: government, values, economy, and treatment of women and slaves. Students become immersed in the debate as they enthusiastically make their case for their respective city-states. Students are so involved, that even after the debate is officially over, they continue with their arguments during lunch or in the hallways.
