Egypt Research Project: The Egyptian Research Project, assigned at the end of the Egypt Unit, gives students a chance to learn about and research an Egyptian god of their choosing. Based on their research, students have to create a thesis statement and provide evidence to support their arguments. This assignment is the first time students are being asked to write a thesis in middle school. Rather than writing a complete paper, the project breaks different parts of the research process into manageable elements that they showcase on a poster. By the end of the project, students have learned how to gather reputable sources, cite them, write an argument that they can back up, and learn deeply about a subject that interests them. They enjoy learning about the different images and symbols associated with their god and they are eager to display their work on the poster. By the end of the project, students are excited that they have become experts about their god. The posters are displayed in the hallways where students can view each others work.
